1.7 When must a project comply?

Organizations are required to comply with the Accessibility Standard for the Design of Public Spaces based on the schedule shown in Table 1.7. The implementation date varies, based on the type and size of the organization that is constructing or redeveloping the public space.

Public spaces that are planned and designed from the outset with accessibility in mind mean that more people have more opportunities to work, shop, travel and play independently. Better-built public spaces will benefit all Ontarians, including visitors, seniors and families.

Refer to Section 1.2 of the Guide for criteria on categorizing an organization.

Note 1: Compliance with the Standard applies only to projects where obligated organizations entered into a construction contract after December 31 2012.

It is important to note that the Accessibility Standard for the Design of Public Spaces is not retroactive. There is no obligation for an organization to retrofit their existing public spaces to comply with the Standard.
